First Comprehensive Introduction of the History of Public Art in Japan
Outdoor sculpture in public spaces was first promoted with the purpose of improving the atmosphere of devastated cities after World War II, and it had a great influence on the changing times. Outdoor sculpture was originally installed in the form of simple unitary objects, but recently it aims at nurturing a sense of community by being the result of a participatory process that involves the artist and local citizens. This exhibition introduces major examples of the postwar history of public art in Japan through a combination photographs, video tapes, models, and plans in separate booths.
