Special Exhibition

Hiraizumi

Pure Land in the Far North-east of Japan

200 Treasures including the Konjikido(Golden Hall) of Chusonji Temple (a National Treasure).

Hiraizumi, the "capital of the far north", was ruled by a northern branch of the Fujiwara family for four generations during a hundred year period beginning in the late 11th century. The Fujiwara leaders constructed a uniquely beautiful city with a refined culture based on the Jodo philosophy of Mahayana Buddhism. The exhibition will exhibit the eleven Buddhist images from the north altar of the Goldern Hall of Chusonji temple for the first time. It will also show Buddhist images from nearby temples and other treasures from the late Heian period, revealing the brilliant cultural heritage of northern Japan centering on Hiraizumi, which rivaled that of Kyoto.
