Murayama Tomoyoshi
Get All of Me Seething

Overview

Tomoyoshi Murayama (1901-1977) was the organizer of groups like Mavo and Sanka that became the leading force in new art movements from the Taisho era (1912-1926) to early Showa (started in 1926). Inspired by Dada and Constructivism, which he experienced while a student in Berlin, Murayama made and showed oil paintings and assemblages after returning to Japan that had a decisive influence on modern Japanese art. Murayama’s activities went beyond art to encompass architecture, dance, stage design, film, the writing of novels, plays, and criticism, illustration, and book design. He has been called the “Japanese Da Vinci.” This exhibition gives a comprehensive view of Murayama’s art, focusing on extant works from the 1920s and 1930s.
