The Art of Eric Carle

Overview

Best known for his picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Eric Carle’s work (b. 1929) is loved by children all over the world. This exhibition, organized with the full cooperation of the Eric Carle Museum, located in Amherst, Massachusetts, consists of approximately 160 original pictures and other works by one of America’s foremost picture-book artists.

The first of the exhibition’s two sections deals with four themes that are central to Carle’s world: animals and nature, journeys, fairy tales and fantasies, and family. Viewers are sure to enjoy the artist’s original collages filled with brilliant colors and delicate handiwork.

In the second section, we examine various aspects of Carle as an artist. This includes some unexpected links with other artists, including Franz Marc, a painter associated with The Blue Rider group, who exerted a great influence on Carle when he first encountered his work as a boy in Germany, and Carle’s friendship with the picture-book artist Leo Lionni. The section also introduces the broad scope of Carle’s art, which extends beyond picture books to include three-dimensional work and stage sets, and the artist’s links with Japan.
