Not long after the Takashimaya Department Store was founded in the late Edo period, it became involved in introducing Japanese culture to the world. At the end of the 19th century, the store collaborated with artists and textile designers to exhibit artistic Japanese textiles in international expositions. The company took an innovative approach to business that joined culture and life, enriching the life and expanding the dreams of ordinary people. Focusing on the role of the department store as a cultural institution, this exhibition presents works of art from the collection of the Takashimaya Historical Museum and explores the cultural history of this Japanese department store in such fields as design, architecture, advertisement, and fashion.
