Shimura Fukumi (b. 1924), who was awarded the Japanese government’s Order of Culture in 2015, has been designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) in silk dyeing and weaving. Her work, made by dyeing thread with natural vegetation, led to the development of a unique artistic field, attracting countless admirers and widespread acclaim all over the world. This wide-ranging exhibition stretches from Shimura’s early efforts to her latest works, in which she returned to her roots in the pongee weaving technique that she inherited from her mother. While focusing on important works to trace Shimura’s 60-year career, the exhibition explores the heart of her art.
