Hamada Shoji (1894-1978) was a world-renowned potter who was designated the first holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) for his mingei (folk art) ceramics. The Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka houses a collection of some 200 items donated by Horio Mikio (1911-2005), who enjoyed a long friendship with Hamada and made use of the potter’s ceramics on a daily basis. Along with the artless vessels that Hamada collected, this exhibition, drawn primarily from Horio’s collection, introduces the charms of the artist’s work.
