HIJIKATA Hisakatsu and YUNOKI Samiro:
Warm Experiences and the Joys of Artistic Creation

Overview

Beginning in 1929, HIJIKATA Hisakatsu (1900–1977) lived for over ten years on the South Sea islands of Palau and Satawal, and created sculptures and paintings dealing with the lives and customs of the local islanders. Meanwhile, YUNOKI Samiro (b. 1922), was influenced by the Mingei folk craft movement and the dyeing artist SERIZAWA Keisuke to pursue a career in textile dyeing. Even after reaching his 100th birthday, Yunoki actively creates works that are inspired by interesting and enjoyable things in everyday life. This exhibition, largely drawn from the museum collection, introduces the two artists’ highly versatile creations including paintings, sculptures, and picture books.
