Tomoto Shisuko’s Paradise
―― I Can’t Help But Paint: A Picture Diary of My Life

Overview

After teaching herself to paint in her 50s, Tomoto Shisuko (1913-2005) pursued a free-wheeling practice in her studio – a four-and-a-half-tatami room in her house. Turning her life into a virtual picture diary, Tomoto exuded joyous creative energy, using everything around her – from canvas to empty boxes, bottles, and even rice scoops – to depict everyday events. In this exhibition, made up of over 100 works, we introduce Tomoto Shisuko’s world of unbridled creativity made up of straightforward and wholly personal expressions.
