Tanuma Takeyoshi: Picturing My Tokyo 1948-1964

Overview

Known for his photographs of children all over the world and his photographic portraits of the era’s most important cultural figures, Tanuma Takeyoshi (b. 1929) remains at the forefront of photography even now at the age of 89. In addition to children and cultural figures, Tanuma has dedicated his life to depicting Tokyo’s shitamachi (old downtown) area, where he was born and raised. Rising up from the burnt-out ruins of World War II, Japan’s capital city embodies a wealth of contradictions and has undergone a series of drastic changes in an effort to revitalize itself. In this exhibition, we focus on Tanuma’s photographs, which capture these aspects, based on three themes: children, shitamachi, and the changing city.
