This exhibition introduces around 140 examples of naïve painting and outsider art from the collection of the Setagaya Art Museum, made by artists from around the world. Four works by Henri Rousseau (1844-1910) are a special feature of the collection. The show also includes works by other modern and contemporary artists such as Joan Miró, Max Ernst, and Yayoi Kusama that have ties to naïve and outsider art. Naïve artists are artists who have not received technical or academic training and are not well known in the world of art, and outsider artists are sometimes afflicted with mental disorders or disabilities. Why do they express themselves in painting or sculpture? By reexamining the lives and work of these artists, we explore the meaning of creating and living with art.
