ASO Saburo: The Sangenjaya Years and Ben Shahn

The painter ASO Saburo (1913–2000) left an indelible mark on postwar art history with his acutely perceived images of contemporary people. Focusing on the 25-year period from 1948 to 1972 in which Aso lived in Setagaya’s Sangenjaya neighborhood, this exhibition presents some of the artist’s preeminent works of the era, such as Alone and Red Sky. It also touches on his relationships with literary figures of the day and presents his personal collection of works by the Social Realist Ben SHAHN, one of the most prominent American painters of the 20th century.
