SETAGAYA ART 2006
20th Anniversary

Overview

The Setagaya Art Exhibition started even before the Setagaya Art Museum opened. It has served as an occasion for exchanges and communication between painters, sculptors, and craftspeople living in Setagaya as well as a venue for showing their art. This exhibition has also functioned as a place where top-class artists of different artists associations could show their work together. It was moved to the museum in 1986. There has been increased participation by new, younger artists and many new modes of expression have appeared, expanding the scope and interest of the show until the present day.
The Setagaya Art Exhibition 2006, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the museum, will present the recent work of 98 artists who have continued to participate over the years. Also on display are works of 69 deceased artists who have participated in the Setagaya Art Exhibition in the past and 11 artists who have moved away from Setagaya, selected from the more than 10,000 artworks in the collection.
In order to celebrate the 20th birthday of the Setagaya Art Museum, the exhibition will be open to the public free of charge from March 30, the day that the museum opened 20 years ago, through April 2. A number of symposiums and workshops are being planned in connection with this exhibition. It is an excellent opportunity to gain an overview of the past and present of Setagaya art, so we hope you to come and enjoy this exhibition.
