Thatched Roofs and Paintbrushes: Mukai Junkichi’s Pictures and Essays

Overview

The painter MUKAI Junkichi, who devoted himself to depicting thatched folk dwellings as they were beginning to disappear after the war, wrote many essays recounting his experiences as he traveled all over Japan. In this exhibition, we present a selection of MUKAI's paintings that are closely connected to his words and writings, including these travelogues, and various recollections from his life as a painter during the turbulent years of the Showa era.
