Mukai Junkichi in Europe: From Paris to Minka

Overview

MUKAI Junkichi (1901–1995) spent the years after World War II painting scenes of traditional thatched-roof minka houses throughout Japan. The highlight of his early career, however, was a trip to Europe he took in his twenties. In 1927, after studying at the Kansai Bijutsuin and Kawabata Gagakko art schools, he set off for Paris, where he attended art class, copied works by the masters at the Louvre, and studied materials, color and composition. Focusing on Mukai’s time in France, this exhibition juxtaposes oil paintings he produced during his sojourn with examples of his later minka works.
