Commemorating the Museum’s 40th Anniversary:
The History of the Setagaya Art Museum—Between Life and Art

Overview

In 2026 the Setagaya Art Museum celebrates its 40th anniversary since opening in 1986. The museum has weathered many changes in the world at large during those four decades, always sustained by the rich cultural environment of Setagaya, home to numerous artists. In a look back at our history, we introduce works in the museum collection ranging from Henri Rousseau and other Naïve Art painters to artists with roots in Setagaya, together with documentation of the diverse exhibitions and events the museum has hosted over the years. Visitors will also enjoy the distinctive architecture of the museum, which blends harmoniously with its verdant surroundings in Kinuta Park.
