Miyamoto Saburo: Exploring Japanese Identity

Overview

While referencing Western art as a European-style painter, Miyamoto Saburo (1905-1974) was also keenly aware of his identity as a Japanese artist. This led him to search for a perfect balance between the two. How did Miyamoto deal with this problem, which had faced so many other European-style painters in the past? This exhibition focuses on the theme of Japan in the artist’s oeuvre from a variety of perspectives, including everything from Miyamoto’s choice of subject and technique to his views on art.
