MATSUMOTO Shunsuke
A Centennial Retrospective

Overview

The painter Shunsuke Matsumoto (1912-1948) appeared like a comet in the world of modern Western-style painting in Japan in the early Showa period with his original and thoughtful paintings. Although he died at the early age of 36, his short career was animated by the strong will he showed as a “laborer of the spirit” and his hope for a better future. This exhibition presents 124 oil paintings and 120 drawings, including Matsumoto’s finest works as well as a variety of documentary materials such as sketch books and note pads. It will be a major retrospective covering this unusual artist’s entire career.
