    Special Talk

Spain seen through the San Fermin Festival: Ikko Narahara and Ramón Masats, the two photographers’ eyes

Ikko Narahara (1931-) created a hugely captivating photobook España Grand Tarde in 1969, after experiencing two summers in Spain during his three-year-stay in Europe. To the young photographer, taking part in the San Fermin Festival was one of the first and decisively important encounters with Spain, which made him go on traveling around this country with great passion.

On the occasion of our upcoming exhibition “Ikko Narahara Photographs: The Promised Journey to Spain” (November 2019 – January 2020), we will have the presence of Alberto Anaut, President of PHotoESPAÑA. The curator, Miki Tsukada will give a brief introduction to the works of Narahara, and Anaut will introduce the works of the Spanish photographer Ramón Masats (1931-), featuring his famous photobook San Fermines first published in 1963, to provide a comparative perspective for rethinking the photographs of Narahara shot in Spain.

This program is supported by the Embassy of Spain in Tokyo and belongs to the series “Nuevo abanico nanban” conceived by the Embassy to highlight the relation of important and well known Japanese artists with Spain.
