On the 30th Anniversary of MUKAI Junkichi’s Death: Records of the Heart
—The Joys of Visiting and Drawing Minka
Overview
In the course of his journeys all over Japan in search of thatched-roof minka houses to paint, MUKAI Junkichi had unforgettable encounters with the people and scenery of each place he visited. This exhibition not only introduces his oil paintings of minka but juxtaposes them with watercolors depicting his interactions with local people as well as his writings about events he experienced and meals he enjoyed on the road. Visitors will enjoy following in Mukai’s footsteps amid the wanderings that occupied fully half of his life.
